History of the Town

The Town of Hopewell emerged from the historic Phelps and Gorham Purchase of 1788, when Massachusetts speculators Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham acquired vast tracts of land in Western New York from the Seneca Nation. Settlement began in early 1789, with pioneering families including Daniel Gates, Daniel Warner, Ezra Platt, Samuel Day, and George Chapin establishing the first homesteads. The community was formally organized as the Town of Hopewell in 1822, transforming from wilderness into a thriving agricultural settlement that would become an important part of Ontario County's development.
